Why is Golf so Important

Golf may be an obsession for many people. However, Winston
Churchill was not among them. Churchill said about golf,
"It is a game whose objective consists in beating a very
small ball, to try to put it in a hole smaller than the
ball, that is always very far and everything with wooden
clubs diabolically designed to avoid it."

Some people may jokingly refer to golf as one of the few
well-dressed sports. Bob Hope, the famous American
comedian, said with much grace, that he started playing
golf because it was the only expensive sport that allowed
him to display his $2,000 cashmere sweaters. Of course,
Hope was only joking - he was a fanatic about the game of
golf. Regardless, golf is much more than just a wardrobe.

The basic premise of golf is fairly simple. Golf involves
hitting a ball (either once or numerous times) from the
golf tee and putting the ball into a hole, following all
the rules of the game. Of course, golf isn't that easy -
it's not always easy to get the ball into the appropriate
hole, especially when faced with a number of obstacles that
can be found on the golf course: high and thick grass to
punish off the green hits; water and sand, trees or field
limits, etc. The object of the game is to complete the
course with the fewest number of golf swings.

Where did golf originate? Golf has a long and complex
history that started at least 600 years ago. Most people
belief that golf's birthplace was Scotland during the
fifteenth century. Actually, historians believe that golf
may have originated in the Netherlands (the Dutch word kolf
means 'club'). Or the origin may have happened as early as
Roman times. The Roman had a game that used a curved club
and a ball covered with feathers - this may have been the
original source of the game.

The precursor of the British Open, the first major, was
played for the first time in 1860 and Willie Park was the
winner. The legend of Tom Morris Father arose when he won
the event in 1862, 1864 and 1867. Nevertheless, his son,
Young Tom Morris, was the first great champion when he won
four consecutive tournaments, starting in 1869. Other famous
winners were JH Taylor in 1894 and Harry Vardon in 1896.
Along with James Braid, these three men were known as the
Great Triumvirate.

Of course, one of the most famous golf moments was the golf
shot that took place far from golf course. This shot, taken
by Alan Shephard on the moon in 1971, was televised and
seen by an audience of millions of people around the world.
The club he used is in the USGA museum.
